Hey, it's okay. she's fine. *wraps her arm around Ruby, pulling her to her* It obviously couldn't be helped. *doesn't want to believe that either she or Dean would cause that level of distress in the family on purpose*

I think we all want our parents to be proud of us, happy about what we're doing. I think that that's why those that have been abandoned or given up or forgotten have such a hard time of it. *it's probably some of the reason she partied and all of that before* She's prouder of you than my parents ever were of me. She at least kept you, would claim you in a crowded room, that sort of thing.

*laughs*

You and Dean take very good care of us. So no matter what she says, don't listen. Got it?

Yeah...just barely. *grins* She was always...hard on me. Even before. I couldn't do anything before, but here in Storybrooke? I...went a little wild, I guess. I think sometimes she'd rather not claim me.

There have been a few times she hasn't wanted to... It makes it irrelevant when everyone knows you and who you're related to though. *laughs*

I know that we try our best. I know that you both deserve more than we can offer though. At least right now. Maybe one of these days we'll stick to one place like Dean wants, but...

I wouldn't be able to do that without him. Don't think you would either.

*tilts her eyes up to look at Ruby*

You know, no matter what, you aren't that same girl. I mean not to say you don't have attitude and you aren't bad ass or whatever. But you're with us. you take care of me and Maddie. You're with Dean. She may just see some of the growing you've done, you know. She might just take you by surprise.

*shakes her head as much as the position will let her*

You guys offer everything that's important for us. You love us. We get food. We get shelter. So what if we travel a lot and sometimes create strange jobs out of nothing. And hunt demons and supernatural creepy things. Or eat a lot of diner food. And pie.

None of that matters. I've lived in much worse conditions with much less.

If we settle down, we settle down, if not, then not. And no, right now, I don't think I would want to put down roots without you and Dean. I'm not ready for that. But one day...

*laughs a little*

Doug says when he's done with school that he's gonna buy a house in Lebanon, Kansas because it's the dead center of the country, so we'll never be that far away from each other. *blushes a little* Just between you and me, I think in four years, I could consider putting some roots there, especially knowing you guys won't ever be very far away.

*Ruby laughs softly and gives Diana a little squeeze*

Just don't mention putting down roots with Doug in Dean's hearing, okay? I like Doug and I'd like to see him live long enough to graduate. *grins*

But no...if and when you do settle down somewhere... If it's not with Dean and myself... You know you'll have to chase us off with how much we'll find random reasons to be around. He'll start making up things to investigate if he can't find enough within a days drive. Just to make sure you're still okay...and that you and Maddie are happy.

He might not say it constantly, but there's not a whole lot he loves more than you two. Nothing's gonna change that. Especially not distance or settling down with a nice boy. *teasing*

*comes out of the bathroom, already dressed but still rubbing a towel hard through his wet hair*

Who's doing what with a nice boy now? *looks suspiciously between the two of them and then sighs at Maddie* Madison, I told you to keep tabs on these two. You're slackin, girl!

*he raises an eyebrow at Ruby and her handful of crackers and pale face but doesn't say anything else, just goes to finish packing his own stuff. He folds up Maddie's playpen and hauls it over his shoulder with his bag out to the car*

You two gonna give me a hand or just sit there gossiping all day?

*puts away the crackers like she jad been doing that anyway* I was saying that nice boys can be over-rated. Grumpy hunters are where it's at.

We packed up, so I was thinking gossip. *smiles at him, getting up to help even as she teases*

I mean...you're all cute with the fetching and carrying. And I like to watch. *winks and picks up her bag and Maddie's diaper bag* But if you really need our help... *kisses his cheek as she moves by him towards the car*

*yells back into the room from where he's packing the car*

Lies! Diana, if you ever date a hunter, I'll lock you up and I'll shoot him. Stick to nerds. Not that this means I approve!

*grabs the bags from Ruby quickly* I was kidding. Go sit down and eat those crackers, you don't need to be hauling stuff around. *narrows his eyes as Ruby opens her mouth, he's sure to protest* I mean it. I will derail this entire trip to take you to the doctor, don't think I won't.

*she rolls her eyes at him and smacks his ass*
Fine. This morning only though. And only so no doctors. Unless you want to explain my...other condition.

I'm not an invalid, Dean... I promise. I look worse than I feel. But...

If I still feel bad in a day or so... I'll think about. While we're in Storybrooke. *clearly doesn't like the ideas of doctors or Dr. Whale, but would give in eventually if he forced the issue*

*she goes back in the room and gets a few little things as she does a last minute room check before coming back out again*

What does being a werewolf have to do with it? It's not like you're gonna walk in and they're gonna test you and bam--everyone knows. You're human until you're not.

If you're still this bad in a day or so, there's no thinking about it. I already dropped the ball big time taking care of you, if you think I'm about to sit in the car and watch you keel over, you're wrong.

*opens the door for her*

Ready.

*helps situate Maddie in the back before getting in the driver's seat and heading out*

*half an hour later they pass a sign saying Welcome to Storybrooke and he feels Ruby's mood darken*

*he reaches out a hand and lays it on her leg, squeezing gently* You wanna rattle off some directions for me?

*she covers his hand with hers, squeezing gently, but her eyes are trained on the woods out her window.*

Just... straight. Only really one road in and out. Granny will be at the diner at this time of day... If you just stay straight, it'll be to the left once your in town.

*she lucks her lips and finally turns to look at him.*

We'll get the key from her and then go get settled.

*they drive a little farther until Dean sees the diner and he makes a u turn, parking next to the curb*

You ready? *he rubs her leg and then reaches up and touches her face* Cause I'm good if you are.

*she leans into his touch a little and sighs* Yes and no, but let's get it over with. *laughs*

I'm going to think of this as girl from small town goes off into the world and finds a family. *she takes his hand in hers and kisses it before opening her door and moving to get out*

*she looks up and down the street at the shops and cars and people...things she thought she would never see again and without Dean and the others there with her, she would probably just get back in the car and forget if she was going to forget. If it wasn't them she was losing, it wouldn't be so necessary to fight.*

*holds out her hand to Dean, a look of determination clear on her face behind the smile*

Please tell me I don't look that bad right now...I can't deal with Granny starting in on me too.

*he smiles and her, smoothing her hair down on both sides before cupping her face and kissing her*

Nervous though so maybe calm the butterflies, huh?

How about me? *lifts eyebrows* Do I look like a *drops voice* hunter?

*makes a big show of looking him over* Only always, but...it also could just be a whole...alpha male thing.

I think you're perfect. *kisses his cheek and then starts to walk up to the door, pausing only slightly before opening it for them and heading inside*

*Dean had walked into a million diners before in his life but had never felt like this. Like every eye in the place was immediately on him, looking him over for faults*

*He holds Ruby's hand tightly and keeps his head high, not meeting any of their eyes though as he looks to her*

*murmurs quietly* This is...nice.

Ignore them. They still aren't very used to strangers. Before... No one ever came here from outside.

*she turns to them and the look of challenge is clear* That's right. He's not from around here. So get it out of your system now, because the slack-jawed staring is going to get real old, real quick, and--

- Ruby

*Granny walks up and interrupts with a stern look, glancing from Ruby to Dean and taking in Diana and Maddie with a quick look to the side*
--And we don't insult the customers.

*she jerks her head over to the side indicating the counter and then leaves to go back behind it*

- Granny

*Ruby rolls her eyes and moves to follow Granny over to the long countertop*

*swallows as he sees the look Granny gives him, more ruffled by the way she looks over the girls, really*

Go ahead, we'll uh-- *jerks his head a table before putting a hand on Diana's back* Take your time.

*he squeezes Ruby's hand and kisses her on the cheek, whispering while he's close to her ear* You're sexy when you get feisty like that. *grins a little before biting it back* Take your time, we'll be right here.

*There's a whole lot of what appears to be quiet, no-nonsense talk from Granny who is calm and serving customers at the counter... Paired with Ruby's emphatic hand gestures and slightly less quiet responses.*

*After several minutes, she shows up at their booth with a tray and three plates full of home cooked food on top of it. With milks.*

Granny thinks you are starving us, or something. *sighs and is clearly fighting a desire to roll her eyes* Also, she says she can make fresh baby food for Maddie instead of...what she called...store bought rubbish.

*starts setting down the milk glasses first*

*bites his lip hard enough that he thinks he tastes blood and he fights turning around and glaring at the old woman*

That's...good. You all need some home-cooked food, it'll be good for you.

And you can tell...Granny...that Maddie is almost a year old, she can eat this.

*pulls a small plate of mashed potatoes towards him and puts a little on a spoon* Right, sweetheart? You're a big girl, huh? But someone who was never around and doesn't even know you're name wouldn't know that, would they? Noooo...

*She laughs and slides in beside Dean* Wouldn't hurt you either, you know.

*she takes a sip of milk and then breaks off a piece of one of the rolls to dip it in the gravy on her plate*

I know she means well? But she makes me crazy. This? Pretty much how my whole life was before. Oh, and she said I can have the key after we eat.

There is one thing though.... *grins at him, loving that Granny seems to already drive him up the wall too* She asked if you were a bounty hunter like Emma.

Guess that answers your question from earlier, huh?

*speaks around a mouthful of his own mashed potatoes* Been eating crap since I was a kid, healthy stuff might kill me.

*focuses on Maddie to keep his temper in check. Being in this place, it makes him feel like his family is being threatened, he doesn't like the way they're all looking at the girls and it's making him tense, like he's about to snap*

I had no intention of mentioning it in front of him. Because I know he'll go crazy.

*smiles* If it isn't with you and Dean, you guys are welcome any time. I won't chase you off. Ever. I love you guys too. And I would still want you around. to make sure you're both happy and taking care of each other.

*looks down, nodding, looking back up at her*

I know he does. I'd never doubt that for a second. And I hope that he knows that too. That nothing changes how much I love him. Or that he'll always be the one I call when something gets really bad. You too, of course.

((Storybrooke time. They met granny in the diner. I think we need a new thread. I drive the rest of the way home today so I'll be in and out as I stop (shopping maybe) until I'm home))
